Newcastle, Australia

For someone that spent a large part of her life growing up in sleepy Newcastle, I often head north to visit its spectacular beaches and have a quick bite to eat at a few favourite local haunts. Make sure to give them a try if you’re ever passing through – you won’t be disappointed.

Subo |  Fine Dining

Newcastle has been longing for an establishment of this calibre. Seriously, the food here is sensational and up there with the likes of some of Sydney’s finest hatted restaurants. Chef Beau Vincent of Tetsuya, Guillaume and Assiette prepares exceptional food, head here for memorable dinner from Wednesday-Sunday or lunch on Friday and Sunday.

551D Hunter St, Newcastle West, (02) 4023 4048  subo.com.au

Estabar |  Café

Delicious gelato and cheese boards, not to mention the great Simple Origin coffee, while taking in the magical view of Newcastle Beach and the Pacific Ocean.

Shop 1, 61 Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle, (02) 4927 1222

Deluca’s Pizza |  Italian

The best Italian style thin crust pizza and pasta outside of Sydney.

159b Darby Street, Cooks Hill, (02) 4929 3555

Nor’East Dining |  Modern Australian

Beautiful harbor location and lovely fit-out. The food is well prepared and tasty. Great place for Sunday brunch with girlfriends.

150 Wharf Road, Newcastle, (02) 4929 6444  noreastdining.com.au

Glee Coffee Roasters |  Espresso Bar

A tiny hole in the wall on Darby Street, Glee’s owner can be best described as ‘coffee obsessed’ a real master of his craft  – head here if you’re serious about coffee.

Silver Spoon |  Café

A sweet daytime cafe with a lovely covered courtyard out the back. They use Campos Coffee, so I’m a fan.

98 Glebe Road, The Junction, (02) 4962 2382

Rolador |  Café

They also make a great breaky and coffee here and worth the visit if you’re in Hamilton and feeling bohemian.

1 Beaumont Street,  Hamilton NSW 2303, (02) 4969 1786

Merewether Surfhouse |  Kiosk/Cafe/Restaurant/Bar

Located on the beach at Merewether, it’s hard to believe that for a town surrounded by ocean, this is the only establishment that offers uninterupted waterfront views of stunning Merewether Beach. Consider it Newcastle’s version of Icebergs at Bondi, a great spot for a drink and a lazy afternoon with friends.

Henderson Parade, Merewether Beach, (02) 02 4918 0000 surfhouse.com.au
